The city council has set many goals to meet in the next decades in response to accelerating climate change. They have set a goal of eliminating all carbon emissions by 2030, as they are one of many cities trying to achieve the goals of the International Paris Agreement. Along with this, by 2030 San Jose plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 40% under its 1990 emissions. By creating deadlines to meet, San Jose will be able to significantly reduce its carbon footprint, and therefore reduce the effects of climate change in the area.
San Jose has always had a mediterranean climate, having dry summers and wet winters. However, it is clear that climate change has had a large impact on San Jose weather, with hotter summers, more droughts, and increased drastic weather conditions. The city has responded to these by implementing some creative solutions through community involvement.
Over the years San Jose has created many different organizations and laws to combat climate change. One of the largest ones is called: Climate Smart San Jose. This community organization added to the city council 2018 focuses on reducing air pollution and water consumption in the Bay Area. It was created to get more community involvement to make substantial progress in the improvement of our environment.
